Father's Day Poem

"Thoughts of you keep me waiting
Sweet, innocent, and misled
A special time, a hug, I'm anticipating
A longing for happiness in my head.

Sitting in my flowered dress,
Rocking on the porch swing in the sun.
My daddy I had to impress;
His heart, I feel, was never won.

The shadows of the night, show no hopeful light.
Walking inside, my head hung low.
Seeing my daddy isn't in sight,
He broke my heart and he will never know."

I wrote this poem with the help from a friend, my senior year in high school. Although my dad is in my life now, he was not around for most of my childhood. Writing this poem was more than just an assignment but was closure for me, and a way to help myself heal. I love my dad and he's one of my heroes but unfortunately he was not always there for me. however, I'm proud of him and the steps he has taken in his life to better himself.
